The port communities in Alaska have been hit hard by the cancellation of the 2021 cruise ship season. Between 2018 and 2019, cruise ship traffic increased by around 200,000 passengers across Southeast Alaska. Next year, 10 new ships and 29 new itineraries were scheduled to visit the region. According to the associations data, at least 144 million cruise ship passengers are expected in Alaska next year. According to data from the 2021 Cruise Industry News Annual Report, the region could have seen just under 14 million cruise guests with Norwegian.

Alaska cruise ship visitors are expected to break new records for the fifth straight year, according to an industry trade group whose projections show the number of passengers disembarking in the state will increase by 2.5 percent in 2021 compared to the previous year.
